Area of Concern

Listeria monocytogenes was found on food and non-food contact surfaces in a large poultry further processing plant.

Issue

A large poultry further processing plant was experiencing numerous Listeria monocytogenes positives on non-food contact surfaces and sporadic positives on food contact surfaces.

Background

The plant experienced a higher number of positive Listeria incidences during the summer. When a presumptive positive was found, a more intense cleaning regiment was required, extending the time needed for sanitation.

Recommendations

The plant began using Sterilex Ultra Disinfectant Cleaner Solution 1 (Solution 1) and Sterilex Ultra Activator Solution (Solution 2), an EPA-registered two-part solution disinfectant on food contact surfaces weekly starting in January and saw an immediate reduction in the number of Listeria positives. Starting May through October, usage of the product was increased to twice per week to help control Listeria positives over the warmer summer months. The PerQuat® solution was applied to equipment surfaces during pre-op and then rinsed before going into production.

Results

The plant saw an immediate reduction in Listeria compared to the previous year.

Surface Area Year 1 Hits Year 2 Hits Reduction
Non-Food Contact Surfaces 47 0 100%
Food Contact Surfaces 7 2 71.5%

Conclusion

This case study suggests that Sterilex Ultra Disinfectant Cleaner Solution 1 and Sterilex Ultra Activator Solution is effective at killing stubborn and hard to control pathogens, including Listeria on both food contact and non-food contact surfaces.

On equipment where Solution 1 and Solution 2 were applied, the plant saw a 70–100% decrease in Listeria positives. Effective maintenance procedures with Sterilex PerQuat technology is essential to reducing pathogen loads and removing Listeria and other pathogens.
